Purpose of Establishment (Written in 2002)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a crucial, life-saving technique used to revive patients who experience sudden cardiopulmonary arrest. The ability to perform CPR is a vital skill that should be practiced not only by healthcare professionals but also by the general public. Standardized CPR guidelines have been widely adopted and have helped to save the lives of many victims of cardiac and respiratory arrest. This uniform set of procedures has also helped to reduce economic losses related to unexpected deaths.

KACPR
KOREAN ASSOCIATION OF CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION
While CPR is lifesaving to individual patients in cardiopulmonary arrest, reaping the full benefits of CPR will require more than just brief episodes of medical intervention. A well-organized emergency medical system, administrative support, and comprehensive public education programs are also critical.

In 2000, the Korean Circulation Society and the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine recognized this need. They formed a joint steering committee to discuss and improve the state of CPR practice and education in Korea and to lay the groundwork for standardized practices.

Through these efforts, the Korean Association of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (KACPR) was founded in 2002 as a multidisciplinary organization involving the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine, Korean Society of Cardiology, Korean Pediatric Society, Korean Neurological Association, Korean Society of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Korean Nurses Association, Korean Emergency Medical Technicians Association, and the Korean Red Cross. The KACPR received formal approval for incorporation from the Ministry of Health and Welfare on November 6, 2004. The KACPR is the leading organization in Korea for CPR guideline development, research, education, public outreach, and international collaboration.
